Ethereal Pathways at Wavelength Space

Last weekend I got to see Wavelength Space’s current show Ethereal Pathways. I wanted to share a little about it and some pictures because I really enjoyed the show and my visit.

The show includes works by Angie To, Eleanor Anderson, and Claire Whitehurst and was curated by Raquel Mullins.

Angie To’s laser-cut and layered screen prints lead the way into the gallery with “North Shore Walks #1-6”. The intricate pieces evoke walking paths, and the incidental marks and graffiti of a sidewalk in North Chattanooga. I loved how familiar it felt to me and that the walks happened along the same routes I’ve probably taken. Further learning that these paintings follow the paths of her late husband’s journey through pancreatic cancer treatment brought a new layer of poetic beauty to the work.

My one year old was so excited about the bright colors and random objects making up the large fiber and quilted works by Eleanor Anderson. (I was also very excited about and inspired by this work!) The pieces are so playful and engaging. The objects, found on the artist’s walks, are integrated in inventive and fascinating ways.

Claire Whitehurst’s ceramic pieces have a really playful and earthy feel to them. The way the drawings use repeating patterns and concentric circles seems almost meditative.

Going for walks is a big part of sustaining my creative life and the idea of “deep play” in this show was a reminder of that and inspiration for my own art practice.

It was a cool show to go to with my family because my one year old boy was fascinated by the work. Since he’s still small enough to baby wear it worked out really well. I bet older kids would enjoy it, too. It’s only up for about one more week!
